AI beats top 'Dota 2' players in one-on-one matches

The bot which had been playing with several players in the world both amateurs and professionals, today faced the Dendi (one of the leaders in Dota 2) at the main stage of The International (annual Dota 2 tournament). OpenAI stated that its AI had been performing at the championship and it has already defeated the Pakistan-based gamer Sumail (the world's best 1v1 player), and Arteezy (the world's overall top player).

The next big step for the project is to create a team of five that can compete against a full squad at next year's worldwide, according to OpenAI.

Dendi later elaborated on Twitter that he found the bot "fun" and "challenging" to play against.

Dota 2 has had computer-controlled algorithms that can play against human players for years, but their programming is relatively rudimentary.

"Our bot is trained entirely through self play". Even for new players, playing against bots is generally only encouraged for those that have absolutely no MOBA experience. OpenAI's bot, however, b no weaknesses in the few minutes the world watched it play at TI7.

Then, Brockman said, it was time to put the bot to the test at The International, which is Dota 2's world championship.

The catch, of course, is that 1v1 Dota is not Dota.

"They're pretty very bad", one player said. The full game is traditionally played 5v5. OpenAI says it plans to continue developing its software so it can play full-scale matches.

While bots have mastered games like Chess and Go, video games like DOTA 2 are still a challenge, but one that OpenAI seems equal to.

OpenAI is a project created by Musk, in order to combat the possibility of rogue artificial intelligence. His thinking is that eventually, AI will be smarter than human beings, and that the creation of them must be done in a safe, regulated format. "AI should be too", Musk tweeted Friday night.
