Guam a pawn in US-North Korea confrontations - academic

Two United States Air Force B-1B bombers, on August 7, conducted a 10-hour sequenced bilateral missions with South Korea and Japan showing that they are ready to "Fight Tonight".

An academic says Guam is being used as a pawn in the confrontation between the North Korea and the United States.

"There is a fake message that was inserted into our local social media circuit".

Communist North Korea has been nuclear sabre rattling. "Now if there is really that imminent threat and the intelligence really shows that's going to happen then, of course, we will recommend that evacuation", he added.

"Unfortunately, we have seen our share of false messages like these that do nothing but stir fear in the hearts and minds of our people", the governor said in the Facebook post.

"The U.S. has maintained a regular bomber presence in the Indo-Asia-Pacific since 2004 and this mission demonstrated our continued ironclad commitment to regional allies".

Guam has been a major base for USA military aircraft since World War II. We are not just a military installation.

'But I have to say, I'm not laughing now, ' he said.

South Korean visitor arrivals recorded a 25 percent increase, while US mainland visitor arrivals were up 14.9 percent over the past year. "And not a lot of Americans know that".

Ellsworth's 37th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron deployed to Guam late last month.

Japan said it had conducted joint air drills with US supersonic bombers in Japanese skies close to the Korean peninsula on Tuesday as tension in the region escalates amid North Korea's continued ballistic missile tests.

Guam is armed with the U.S. Army's defense system known as Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, which can intercept missiles.
