Mayor of London plans to get rid of poor mobile connectivity

A letter sent by the mayor to all 33 London local authorities said his goals for connecting the capital include "delivering 4G mobile connectivity to London Underground, both in stations and tunnels from 2019, future-proofed ready for 5G".

Khan's plans mean fewer dark spots and no more suffering with connection dropouts on the underground as you jump between stations and desperately stab the Wi-Fi logo in hope of connecting again before the train starts moving.

In an announcement, Khan introduced his "Not-Spot" team initiative which will look for blind spots in the city and develop solutions to improve coverage in the capital.

United Kingdom mobile operators will take it in turns to test their networks on the London Underground as part of a trial on the Waterloo & City line, as authorities attempt to bring coverage Europe's biggest "not-spot", the Telegraph reported on Wednesday.

The upcoming Elizabeth Line will launch with mobile coverage through central London in December 2018, providing continuous phone coverage through tunnels along the line that stretches more than 60 miles from Reading and Heathrow to Shenfield and Abbey Wood. "But we also need London's planners to get behind this work, otherwise our digital ambitions risk being strangled by red tape".

As for overground rail, areas such as Rotherhithe, as well as some parts of Westminster and the City of London are considered to be some of the most problematic areas for connectivity in London.

"Our digital connectivity needs to be improved", he said.

"Our digital connectivity needs to be improved, internet connectivity is now a key public utility, and it is no surprise that some businesses see poor connectivity as a barrier to growth", London mayor Sadiq Khan said in a statement. It's all part of a bit push to eliminate "not spots" in London and turn us into a world-class, digitally connected city.

The Mayor of London plans to boost London's digital connectivity by improving infrastructure across the city.
