Consumer Reports pulls Microsoft Surface recommendation due to reliability issues

Influential reviewer Consumer Reports says that it no longer recommends Microsoft Surface tablets and laptops.

According to a Consumer Reports survey of over 90,000 tablet and laptop owners, an estimated 25 percent of those with Microsoft Surface devices will experience "problems by the end of the second year of ownership". Others said the touch screen was not responsive enough or that the devices froze or shut off unexpectedly.

More than this, Consumer Reports goes on to say that it "cannot recommend any other Microsoft laptops or tablets". As you might imagine, Microsoft is already responding against these findings, stating that the company does not believe that the study "accurately reflects Surface owners' true experiences".

In addition, the choice to omit a Thunderbolt 3 from the Surface Pro would be regarded as a bad move from Microsoft because apart from the spec bump, there was nothing different being marketed about the 2-in-1. Because of this, Consumer Reports can not recommend the devices.

"Microsoft is relatively new to the hardware business, and this is the first year we've had enough data to estimate predicted reliability for the company's laptops", the publication said in the report.

In a fairly short but to-the-point tweet on Thursday morning, Reuters revealed that Microsoft Surface devices have underwhelmed in Consumer Reports' reliability tests. Apple laptops and tablets came out on top in Consumer Reports' reliability surveys.

More specifically - and, arguably more importantly - the move was made in response to annual subscriber surveys between 2014 and early this year citing "two-year breakage rates of 25%".

Consumer Reports noted that the Surface Pro, whether in the form of tablet or with keyboard attached, performed very well in its lab tests. On the same front, Apple also led other tech companies in the same Consumer Reports survey, posting a two-year breakage rate among survey respondents of only 10 percent. It appears that they have briefed a few news outlets, and Microsoft, ahead of publication. Within the Surface product family, Microsoft also sells the Surface Laptop, which features a traditional clamshell laptop design.
