Branden Albert Is Reconsidering His Week-Old Retirement

Branden Albert Is Reconsidering His Week-Old Retirement

Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com reports that the Jacksonville Jaguars are not expected to allow Albert to return to the team after his one-week hiatus. His return to the Jaguars has to be considered a boon for the struggling Blake Bortles and the rest of this team's talented offense. Albert quit after three training camp practices.

Albert was working out in the team facility on the players' day off on July 30 and tight end Marcedes Lewis said he spoke with Albert that day and they talked about the upcoming season. None of that money was guaranteed, which is why he wanted a new contract. That's because he's actually reporting back to training camp even after announcing his abrupt retirement from the National Football League only several days earlier. With Albert out of the picture the Jaguars will likely turn to rookie Cam Robinson at left tackle.

It's equally unclear why Albert wants to return.

His $9.575 million salary set for 2018 was far more precarious, however, and by walking away Jacksonville had the right to go after the $3.4 million in bonus money Albert got when he signed his current deal with Miami in 2014.

The Jaguars, who are holding joint practices with the Patriots in New England, declined to comment on the situation Monday.

The Jaguars acquired Albert from the Dolphins in March as a veteran stopgap.

Albert, a first-round pick in 2008, is a two-time Pro Bowl selection.

Jacksonville placed Albert on the exempt/left squad list last week.

Albert helped the Dolphins rush for 1,824 yards and allowed just four sacks in 13 games past year, despite playing with a ligament tear in his wrist for the second half of the season.
