Samsung Galaxy S8 Active goes outdoors

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active goes outdoors

Samsung announced the ruggedized S8 Active on Monday, along with AT&T which will be the exclusive carrier for the smartphone for "a limited time".

If that wasn't enough, the Galaxy S8 Active is claimed to have passed the US Military Standard (MIL-STD) 810G tests for ruggedness, much like the LG G6. That might change this year, though.

Whether you live an adventurous life or have butterfingers, Samsung has a new smartphone you might want to consider: the Galaxy S8 Active.

Samsung typically launches a tougher version of its Galaxy S smartphones a few months after the original launches.

"The S8 Active has a 5.8" Super AMOLED display with the same 18.5:9 aspect ratio and 2960x1440 resolution as the other Galaxy S8 models.

The extra-rugged, flat-screened, non-Infinity take on the gorgeous yet fragile S8 is today properly unveiled by AT&T at last, and... why should we care about it again? There's a metal frame and a bumper on all four sides for added resistance.

This includes the same smart camera, 64 GB of expandable storage, Qualcomm's fastest processor, 5G Evolution, voice over LTE, and the same 4 GB of RAM. If you'll buy a Galaxy S8 Active on AT&T Next and add DirectTV, you'll be able to get a second S8 for free, or $500 towards a new Samsung TV purchased online.

The S8 Active will be available for pre order from tomorrow via AT&T. At a hefty retail price of $850 (or $28.34 a month with 30 AT&T Next payments), it's indeed not easy to justify the existence of this literal beast. The new handset will be available in two color variants - Meteor Gray or Titanium Gold - running Android Nougat out of the box.

Leaked photos have also revealed that the Note 8 could be the first Samsung device to incorporate a dual-lens camera.
