Netflix makes its first ever acquisition with Millarworld purchase

USA video streaming company Netflix Inc said on Monday it bought comic book publisher Millarworld, home to titles such as 'Kick-Ass, ' in its first ever acquisition.

Mark Millar, who created the comic books that were turned into Kick-Ass and Kingsman and came up with the stories that inspired Captain America: Civil War and Logan, is joining Netflix.

Three of Millarworld's franchises have already been developed into films that have earned almost $1bn (£767m) at the worldwide box office. I started working with them as a teenager, and I've never been more excited about where we're going next as Millarworld joins the Netflix team.

Netflix added 5.2 million new subscribers during the second quarter. With its catalog of undeveloped properties, he said, and Millar on board, Netflix will be able pick and choose from a creative group with an excellent track record.

Millar created the comics Kick-Ass and Kingsman, both of which have spawned successful film franchises. His book, The Ultimates, was named by Time Magazine as Comic Book Of The Decade and his Superman opus, Red Son, remains the best-selling Superman graphic novel of all time.

Netflix has acquired Millarworld, the streaming media company announced on Monday. This marks the first acquisition of this kind by Netflix as the company seeks to acquire intellectual property and ownership of stories.

Netflix is delving deeper into the comic book world with its first acquisition, comic book publisher Millarworld.

It is unclear if Netflix will spend the sums Marvel does on its movies, which can cost up to $250 million. Netflix also said Millar will continue to develop new characters for Netflix after the deal.

But, Pachter said, Netflix could do much worse than Millarworld. We'd all had success at DC and Marvel, but this was a chance to control the characters created and reap the rewards from any future movies, TV or merchandise that ever came from those characters and books.
